Head Sustainability Risk Management

Responsibilities

As functional Head Sustainability Risk Management, you are the content lead and have an instrumental role in crafting and implementing Swiss Re's strategy regarding sustainability. As part of this, you steer Swiss Re's Sustainability Risk Framework, identify sustainability risks across our business activities, and facilitate the development of innovative solutions to address sustainability issues. In addition, you represent and advocate Swiss Re's position on selected sustainability risk topics to external stakeholders.

Together with the wider Sustainability, Political and Emerging Risk team, your responsibilities include:

  • coordinating and renewing a Group-wide sustainability strategy together with all key internal stakeholders. Some of the most prominent topics include climate change, financial inclusion, and social impact evaluation and measurement
  • further developing Swiss Re's Sustainability Risk Framework and positioning Swiss Re's activities in the larger context (e.g. UN Sustainable Development Goals)
  • understanding and assessing externalities of Swiss Re's business activities, i.e. environmental and social impacts of our business
  • actively managing and steering corporate responsibility / sustainability-related topics with clearly assigned responsibilities across the Group
  • enhancing Group-wide sustainability progress measurement, including metrics, targets and measures
  • reporting on sustainability risks and mitigation efforts to senior management and business functions
  • developing strategies to influence related debates in the industry (e.g. CRO Forum, insurance associations)
  • handling interactions with relevant key stakeholders (clients, employees, governments, civil society, ethical shareholders and investors)
  • ensuring public transparency by providing input to the Corporate Responsibility Report and managing requests from rating agencies
  • representing Swiss Re in key external associations and initiatives in coordination with the Head Sustainability, Political and Emerging Risk Management
  • supporting the Head Sustainability, Political and Emerging Risk Management in coordinating the activities of the wider team

    Our Sustainability, Political and Emerging Risk Management team is responsible for scanning the horizon for future risks and developments, assessing the impact on Swiss Re, and enabling integrated and forward-looking decision-making. It therefore plays a strong role in early warning, risk mitigation and thought leadership. The team is embedded in Group Qualitative Risk Management which is responsible for the risks that are not quantitatively modelled, such as sustainability, political, emerging, operational, regulatory, and information security risks.

    As functional Head Sustainability Risk Management, you are a senior expert with a deep understanding of sustainability and re/insurance matters who can guide related initiatives, have a strategic mind-set to anticipate future trends, and have extensive experience in dealing with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. You are supported by sustainability-related experts, in a team that acts as a center of competence for environmental, social and governance topics affecting the insurance sector. In your role as functional head, you lead the content work in close alignment with the Head of Sustainability, Political and Emerging Risk Management who is responsible for managing and developing the team, setting and achieving the team's objectives and the delivery of the assigned tasks and initiatives.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or PhD in Natural Sciences or another relevant discipline for sustainability
  • At least 8-10 years of relevant work experience in sustainability and financial services industry (underwriting and asset management experience is a big plus)
  • Excellent knowledge about sustainability matters and policy developments, civil society discourse on risks (UN Sustainable Development Goals, climate negotiations, climate risks, societal and governance themes)
  • Deep understanding of the value proposition of reinsurance, underwriting, investments as well as risk management combined with a strategic mindset
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience in dealing with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
  • Strong content leadership and organizational skills
  • Strong team player as well as diplomatic skills
  • Excellent communication skills, proficiency in oral and written English is essential, other languages are a plus
